Section 1: Business Information

Dear Business Owner,

Thank you for your interest in this Scotland 5G Centre and Ayrshire Councils collaborative initiative which explores the potential of 5G and advanced wireless technologies to improve connectivity and boost productivity for Ayrshire businesses.

The backdrop for this initiative is North Ayrshire Council’s successful application to the UK Government Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) 5G Innovation Region (5GIR) fund. Ayrshire has been chosen as one of ten successful regions across the UK and has been awarded with £3.8m to become a 5G Innovation Region (5GIR), with aims of becoming a UK leader in advanced manufacturing (https://scotland5gcentre.org/major-tech-boost-as-ayrshire-named-innovation-region/).

Three Strategic Hub Locations have been put forward for development, the Digital Processing Manufacturing Centre (DPMC), the Aerospace Innovation Hub and the Ayrshire Innovation Park. This application was fortified by nineteen letters of support received from key partners and industry, including the Scottish Enterprise, National Manufacturing Institute Scotland, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, Spirit AeroSystems and Vodafone Ltd, amongst others (all partners are listed at the end of this EoI application).

The momentum seen in core manufacturing industries and technological innovation in the region, mean that Ayrshire will make progress towards its core vision of becoming “the UK’s Premier Manufacturing-Focused 5G Hub”. Partners, including the Scotland 5G Centre, are keen to support this mission in Ayrshire, enabling manufacturing businesses to harness the full potential of 5G for their growth, competitiveness, and sustainability.

The purpose of your Expression of Interest (EoI) is to formally signal your interest and readiness to participate in a specific project or initiative, in this case, the 5G Innovation Region (5GIR) project in Ayrshire. The key purposes of the EoI include:

  1. Showcasing Interest and Commitment: It serves as a declaration of your interest and commitment to being involved in the 5GIR project, specifically in its application within the manufacturing sector.

  2. Understanding and Addressing Challenges: The EoI aims to gather insights into the specific connectivity challenges and needs faced by businesses in the manufacturing sector. This information is crucial for tailoring the 5G solutions to be as effective and beneficial as possible.

  3. Evaluating Potential Partners and Stakeholders: For the organisers, the EoI process helps in assessing the capabilities, needs, and expectations of various stakeholders and potential partners. This evaluation is essential for forming successful collaborations.

  4. Informing Project Development: The insights gathered through the EoI contribute to the overall development and refinement of the 5GIR project, ensuring that it aligns with the actual needs and aspirations of the manufacturing sector in Ayrshire.

  5. Laying Groundwork for Future Expansion: While the current focus is on manufacturing, the information and experiences derived from this phase will inform and facilitate future expansion of the 5GIR project into other sectors, making the EoI a foundational step for broader applications.

In summary, your EoI is a critical tool for indicating your willingness to engage with the 5GIR project, providing valuable data for its customisation and implementation, and setting the stage for its success and future growth.
