New 5G funding opportunities
The UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has launched an open £30 million competition aiming to explore and develop new use cases and sustainable business models for 5G applications and services.
The competition, called 5G Create, is open to all sectors including creative industries, utilities (energy and water), health and social care, and logistics. It is part of the UK Government’s 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme.
DCMS and UK5G are running a series of briefing events on the competition, including a workshop at the Technology and Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow on 12 March 2020.
The workshop is open to organisations and businesses interested in taking part in projects, including:
- organisations involved in the development, trialling and usage of applications, products, services
- network providers
- mobile network operators
- technology vendors
- local authorities and other public service delivery bodies
If you are interested in the competition and looking for potential collaborators, there will be an opportunity for delegates to deliver a two-minute pitch to the room.

Another opportunity for the diary
Another event worth noting is an Innovation Network meeting at Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh on 25 March, organised by NHS Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Government. This will include details of a £140 million funding opportunity for projects on AI in health and social care – including for projects in Scotland.
